PHOTO BYIMOGEN TODDflippinOpened to the public on September 8, the newYMCA gymnastics center provided betteropportunities for both students and instructors. When senior Erin Riley arrived atwork at the new Monroe CountyYMCA gymnastics center on ShortStreet, she set her bag down andcheerily greeted students as theywalked in the door. BeforeSeptember, staff members wererequired to assemble the gymnasticsequipment every day. At last, Rileycould focus on what mattered most:her students. This new convenience was justone advantage of the 6,000 squarefoot annex building constructed toaccommodate the ever-expandingYMCA gymnastics program.Aside from making Rileys jobeasier, the new facility alsobenefited students. We can teachnew skills that we couldnt teachbefore, Riley said. The gymnasticscenter contained new equipment, including a foam block pit, tumblingfloors, balance beams, and two setsof uneven bars necessary forteaching higher-level students.Another benefit of theexpansion was increased instructiontime. The size of the program hadgrown from about 200 students inprevious years to 400. With thenew facility, YMCA hoped to triplethe amount of scheduledprogramming for all age groups, according to its website. Some ofthe more advanced kids can go fortwo hour [practices], Riley said. The facility would helpinstructors like Riley reach morestudents and provide higher qualityclasses. Riley, who had been aninstructor for three years and agymnast for 1 6 years, enjoyed theopportunity to train students andhelp them share in her passion. Itsgood to teach people about thesame thing Ive been doing for along time, she said.Although she would beleaving for college the followingyear, Riley could be comforted bythe fact that the program wouldflourish in its new home.- LUCILLE POWERSEvery footballgame, I throw afootball aroundwith myfriends.- sophomoreNicholas ElliottIts fun seeingall of thedifferent kindsof food.- juniorMadison SilversCornhole isalways a friend-favorite to playat the IUfootball games.- seniorDillon Cron |
