Description: WuOwi-^IMm*college tradition: pQlrt^trliuteA South alumnus competed in the Little 500 race. The Little 500 bicycle race, a time-honored tradition at Indiana University, was heldannually at Bill Armstrong Stadium. For many Bloomington South students, the race providedan opportunity to cheer on cyclists and socialize with friends while taking part in a traditionthat began in 1951. However, persistent rain threatened the turnout of the race, and manyfans retreated when it was delayed midway through. Former South graduate IsaacSimonelli raced for the Hoosier Climber? team, sponsored by Hoosier Heights IndoorRock Climbing Gym. Simonelli was inspired to become a part of the IU tradition by racingafter becoming caught up in the magic of the race. Simonelli was not a cyclist while heattended South, although he did work as a mechanic for the Solar Bike team. Though thisrace wasnt my first time in the Little 500, I feel like just within the last few months I havebecome a cyclist; perhaps not a good one, but I at least have an idea of how to race,Simonelli said. The rain had a negative impact on the cyclists, leaving them cold, wet anddirty. Simonelli spent the time he wasnt racing huddled up under a blanket trying to keepwarm, and wondering why they werent just canceling the race. Despite unpredictableweather, loyal fans remained and cheered on the cyclists, partaking in a college traditionthat encompasses the community as a whole.-ELIZA WILLIAMSoi nnaiana university cheer on Little 500 bike.
