Description: working for the weekendBloomington South students gain maturity and work experienceexcursions.whistle while you workAs the bell rang signaling the end ofthe school day, Bloomington Southstudents ventured off to their afternoonpractices, babysitting, Starbucks runs, volunteer outings, and club meetings.Although after school activites werequite eventful, none could compare tothe experience students received frompart-time jobs and the money that camewith working didnt hurt either.During her junior year, Laura Emery kept busy with three AP classes,South tennis, Decycles, and a part-timejob at Fazolis Italian Restaurant. Thatmight have been a handful, but not forthis well organized junior, who kepton top of all her daily activities withhelp from her Panther Planner. Fromher work experience, she learned to bemore careful with her time and be aresponsible young adult.Emery got the job because she needed money for weekend excursionswith her friends. Whether going to themovies or out to eat, she learned to organize her time and her money to dothe things she wanted to do. She spenther money wisely and became a wiseshopper. She worked three times a week forfour hours and her job had some greatperks. I like my job, but my favoritepart is eating their breadsticks with al-fredo sauce.Junior Samuel Hass enjoyed asimilar perk at his job. Hass workedat the Redbud Hills Retirement Community for three years. The job is nothard, the shifts are a bit short for myliking, but the good free food makesup for it, Hass said. Hass shifts lastedtwo and a half hours in the evenings, sohe still had time to fit in Science Olympiad practice and homework.South students learned responsibilityand how to manage the time betweenschool and work life by holding downpart-time jobs. Though summers andweekends have always been anticipated by high school students, their corresponding activities were expensive.After-school and summer jobs wereone way to allow students to fund theirsummer and weekend fun.-ALEXANDRA DYETIMELESS jobsThroughout the past 100 years, South students have gained experience working part-time jobs.
