Description: |
north vs. southTwo rival schools come together for a little friendly competition. When Bloomington South and BloomingtonNorth met to compete, it could get heated, according to South sophomore ChanceLowry. He experienced first hand, whileplaying football, how the rivalry could get serious during games. At the end of the gamenobody talked to each other because theywere so caught up in it, Lowry said, explaining how even friends from opposing schoolsacted during times of competition.Senior Kayleigh Egner was a newcomer to the craze, because she had moved toBloomington from Florida at the end of her junior year. However, she caught on quickly after attending the Souths football game againstNorth. It was really intense, and everyonewas in their Panther and Cougar outfits, shesaid. Egner saw the intensity of the rivalry. Sheheard South students had things thrown atthem while walking through the North studentsection.Yet during the summer Egner attendedYoung Life, which was for both North andSouth students. She said that everyone gotalong well and it seemed like they werent usedto competing against each other. So while therivalry was intense at times, friendships werecommon between the schools.Although Lowry noticed the intensity during football, he also said that everyones coolafter a while. It could have been the continuation of middle school friendships that keptthe rivalry friendly. This also allowed for community groups made up of students from bothschools like Young Life to bring people fromboth schools together. It was a friendly rivalry between the schoolsand did not go beyond the court, field, orcourse. Despite competing often, the catfights were always finished at the end of theday. -KATHERINE SPEERAbove: (Left to right) Seniors Courtney Crowl, BaileySmith, Alexandria Ballard, Megan McDevitt, and AutumnHawkins show the intensity of the rivalry during the Northversus South football game by shaking the signature Panther milk jugs.
