Description: stepping upFreshman Casey Warthan stepped into some big cleats inorder to make the 2009 softball team the best they could be.to theEvery great team has great leaders.From talent to respectability, these players are the main focus of their team.But at times, the leaders need youngerplayers to step into bigger shoes andlead the team in a new way.Freshman Casey Warthan received this experience first hand, beingthe only freshman on the varsity Bloomington South softball team. Shes great.She gets along with the girls and workshard, said senior Andrea Dicken.Warthan worked hard to earn herspot on the varsity team. She beganpitching in 2002 and had played forthe Indiana travel teams BloomingtonPride and Indiana Gators since she wasten.Warthan, a pitcher and outfielder,said it was intimidating to play forSouth, but then realized it was fun toget the chance to play with older girls.Theyre really supportive, but I feel alot of pressure to not make mistakes.But Warthan and the rest of theteam took that pressure and focusedplate ,opponents, like theit on beating theirsixth ranked Columbus North teamWe did it for [Leigh Ann] Beasley,explained Warthan. Beasley was hit bya line drive and dislocated her finger,but luckily Warthan was there to coverthe pitching duties.It was a great team performance andan excellent experience for Warthan.-MARCO REGOLI72 I SPORTS softball
