No matter what skills a person had, there was always a new way to excel learning. Work Study was a program thathelped students who were having trouble in regular school classes and gave them a newoption to succeed. Students learned skills that will help them in their future careers. Ithelped me develop skills to be a bus boy at Bob Evans, said junior Tim Nelson. WorkStudys main goal was to give students the reassurance they wanted and the learning opportunities they needed in order to have a more successful future.People saw Work Study students contributing to the school by recycling, passingout newspapers to classes, and washing the lunch room tables. But most of the studentsafter freshman year decided to contribute to the whole community by applying for jobs. The most popular places were restaurants all throughout Bloomington. They work indinning rooms, bus tables, and work with the customers, said Cody Sexton, an eveningmanager at Panera. This place teaches kids to work in a store that is high volume andthey also learn to respect others. Jobs that work study chose for the students had to bea fun environment but also a place for learning new things. I like working at Fazolis andpassing out breadsticks to the customers is fun, said senior Jessica Denison.Work study has about 30 to 38 kids each year and has been growing since itstarted. Students who applied were not doing as well as they wanted to do at South. Itis a safety net for kids who werent going to graduate high school, said teacher JaneFeller. Mrs. Feller helps students in work study with resumes and telephone skills that cansometimes be as easy as ordering a pizza. She also makes sure that her students areset in a good working environment. One time I was at an interview for a student and theperson in charge was reluctant to hire a Work Study student, so I decided I didnt want mystudent to work in that environment, said Feller. Work Study has been a good learningexperience for students at South, and it has given them hope that they can achieve.52 Academics
