Description: Custodians, Cafe term, and Office Staffehind the ScenesBy Alexander AudretschEvery day, students easily walked through Bloomington Souths hallsand into spotless classrooms. When they needed to clear up an absence, they gotit done in no time. When they got sick or hurt during school, they were treatedpromptly and effectively. And when they needed the school to sign a form sothey could get a job, they got everything signed without any trouble. Only withthe help of the sometimes unnoticed school staff—people who worked for theschool but werent teachers or administrators—could all this have happened.Unacknowledged and underappreciated, they kept the school running smoothly. This year marked the retirement of one of the most popular behind-the-scenes workers at South—Ms. Judy Clark. To those who hadnt known her,Clark was the head secretary at South. However, for many of the students, shemeant much more. She was beloved by the Student Council officers for her unwaveringcommitment to helping them accomplish their goals. Every time the StudentCouncil needed to use the school systems money to buy things such aswater and materials for school dances or food for Teacher Appreciation Day,Mrs. Clark would leave as early as 6:30 in the morning and drive acrosstown to Sams Club to authorize the payment. Both teachers and studentswere extremely grateful towards her—she spent a huge amount of her timeorganizing and managing events. Not only did Clark help out with innumerable events, she alsohelped individual students. Students deeply appreciated her for all the supportshe gave them, both school-related and about life in general. For example, senior Katherine Steinmetz, a teachers assistant at the attendance office andClarks right hand man, said that if you ever have a bad day, [Judy Clark] isalways there to cheer you up.After having been helpful for so long, Mrs. Clark knew it was hertime to retire. Her husband was retiring at the same time she was, and theyplanned to travel around America after retiring. Once she is gone, her legacywill always be remembered. She was like a mother to the students at South, whoshe called little cherubs. People always ask me why I call my students mylittle cherubs, she said. I tell them that its because cherubs are little angels. All of these kids are little angels, and if their halos just happen to be on a littlecrooked, its my job to straighten them.Senior StephanieCornthwiate talksabout cafeteria stafferSandra Fleener-Hastings.My boyfriends mom [Sandra]is a lunch lady, and she alwaysbrings me bosco sticks afterschool.Junior JessicaRautenkranz talksabout security guardChadYou can always joke aroundwith Chad; he never takes meseriously.;The cafeteria staff was kind and helpful throughout the yearto the droves of students who bought their lunches in thecafeteria. Cafeteria favorites included steaks with mashedpotatos, tacos, subs, and the variety of cookies served daily.Front Row: Cosette Sebastian, Diane Jackson, KarinDillrman, Kathy Chitwood.
