Description: Students Learn Science Through Doingxploring ScienceStory By Kelly KishFor Bloomington High School South freshman, JosephHong, science is more than just a class, its a hobby, anda specialty. Hong moved to Bloomington from Korea in2002 and has excelled in science ever since.Hongs science experience started in seventh gradeat Jackson Creek Middle School when he joined ScienceOlympiad and competed in events such as forensics anddisease detectives. He then went on to enter an E. Coliexperiment in the Intel Science Fair.To expand his learning in science Hong took achemistry class at Northwestern the summer beforehis freshman year. During his fresman year Hong tookHonors Chemistry and said, it was just a review for me,and I just studied and learned more about the subject.Hong was also known for solving the Rubiks Cubeand working on it during classes. It took him three daysto figure out the 3x3 cube. If you know how the patternwill be made, its easy to figure out how to solve it, hesaid. The current world record is 10.48 seconds; Hongsbest time is about 40 seconds.Hong competed in the Science and Engineering Fair atIvy Tech and advanced to the national level. With Mr. PaulFarmer sponsoring him, Hong continued working withE.Coli and used herbs inhibitors such as cinnamon as andginger for the science fair.Looking to apply to prestigious schools like Harvard,MIT, and Johns Hopkins, Hong hopes to have a brightfuture in the science field doing something he loves.Junior Amy Zhang talkedabout AP BiologyI really enjoyed the diverse subjects andactivities.
