HEROES ON THE COURTRole models can play an important part insomeones life. They are what people want toemulate or aspire to be. Athletes who are rolemodels can inspire people both in the game andordinary life. In honor of the 2016 U.S TennisOpen back in August, some of the players on theboys tennis team shared their favorite professionaltennis players, and how these pros inspire themon and off the court.Sophomore Calvin Prenkerts favorite professionaltennis players include Roger Federer and SerenaWilliams. He admires Federers mindset, sayingthat the pro works hard [and] has a good attitude.Prenkert also looks up to Federers skill. I alsolike his one-handed backhand [swing], I cant doit, but its really cool, he said. He also admiresWilliams mental strength. Prenkert said that helooks up to her because she faces a lot ofadversity, but shes still able to come out on top.Fellow sophomore Christopher Piekarskysfavorite professional tennis players are RafaelNadal and Dustin Brown. [Nadal] has pretty sickhair, Piekarsky said, and I like to watch him playbecause hes super athletic, and I like [Brown]because he hits a lot of trick shots.CLASS CHEMISTRYAs we say goodbye to the Class of 2017, senior varsity playerslook back at the past few years.Senior year is a time to reflect upon memories and create newones, whether that be in the classroom or on the court. This isespecially true of the boys tennis team, a group that has hadno shortage of fun moments throughout their four seasons. This year was in no way a cake walk. SeniorMohammed Dabdoub said that the team has had a toughseason since they lost key varsity members, but they wereable to beat their previous record which is a greataccomplishment. The loss of so many former membersrequired the upperclassmen to step up and become leaders ofthe team. We lost five of our seven varsity players from lastyear, so I had to step up and be a leader to our youngerplayers, senior Henry Ruff said. Ruffs favorite moment ofthe season was seeing the underclass tennis players rise tothe occasion and help the team win several importantmatches.Although the season was strenuous, the boys still found timeto have many outside bonding experiences. The team startstheir season with Midnight Madness, a team tradition wherethey start their first practice at midnight. It represents thestart of a new season and chapter in Bloomington SouthTennis, Ruff said.Senior Eric Johnsen also enjoyed hanging out with histeam, describing them as close-knit, and he admired howall the teammates were focused on winning. Dabdoubexpressed similar feelings. [The] team is very small, so weare really good friends, and there isnt any drama, he said.As the senior players get ready for their graduation, theyreflect on the past few years. Johnsen remembered the teamwinning sectionals and defeating Bloomington North duringhis freshmen year, while Ruff enjoyed seeing all his hardwork pay off by becoming a varsity player. AlthoughDabdoub, Ruff, and Johnsen will be moving on,Bloomington South Tennis will remain a highlight in theirhigh school career.-MAGGIE BUISTS ARRESTED IN ANTI-TERROISM INVESTIGATION 11/5 CHINESE MOGUL BUYS DICK CLARK PRODUCTIONS 7/12 Athletics 143 |
