utside the OrdinaryHidden TalentsBy Allie Bierhaus and Mari WeltonThe lives students led outside of school were sometimes full of surprises. There was a wealth ofhidden talents and extraordinary activities students participated in once they stepped outside the schooldoors. From modeling to playing the harp, Bloomington High School South students were involved withmany diverse pastimes.Ive always played instruments and I wanted to try something new and different. The harpseemed cool, said senior Leilani Beams, who was an active harpist. Beams used to play the piano andviolin but switched to harp because she liked how relaxing it was. She explained that when playing theharp, you use both your feet and hands, which is why so few people play it. She took lessons with theIU Harp Program where she discovered Bloomingtons sizable harp-playing community.Another out-of-the-ordinary activity students participated in was modeling. South seniorJeremy Black started his modeling career this year. Black said his father got him in to modeling, he didit all for me, he wanted to see me succeed. Black said that [Modeling] is the easiest job in the worldand the money is great. The only hard part is that [the agency] can call me at anytime and I have to beable to show up.As a Girl Scout, sophomore Kelsey Coy also had to be able to show up for meetings. Coy hadbeen a Girl Scout since she was in the first grade. Its a good organization and its really fun. My favoritepart is the cookies, said Coy, We also do a lot of volunteering.Another activity outside of South that a relatively large number of students participated in waspaintball. We usually play at my house, where all of my friends get a little taste of my paint, said juniorJon Baker. Baker said he began playing in the 4th grade with his best bud J Pope (junior Justin Pope). They started playing after watching MTVs Jackass, a show in which the actors were always shootingeach other with paintball guns. Baker said, I love playing with my friends for fun. But I think I mightjoin a three-man competition over the summer.South has an incredible diversity of activities represented by its students. Some climb cliffs, and some raise animals, and some even do research for Indiana University. What all these students havein common is that they have remarkable, unique talents that they use once they walk out of the schooldoors.Hidden TaCent Q^C^p^J Student Life |
