Description: ^/J/ew Faces ConquerNew PlacesNew Students at SouthStory By Molly MeridithSouths new students faced many different challenges. Different classes, new faces, and evendifferent climates, were all part of the changes students encountered.Sarah Bynum was one of many freshmen who experienced different and new classes. Bynumtransferred from a private school in Bloomington called Lighthouse Christian Academy. Bynum went toLighthouse through middle school. The curriculum is really different here. There arent any more Bibleclasses, said Bynum. Not having any Bible classes was a huge adjustment for Bynum. Another big changewas her grades. My GPA has gone up a lot. South is definitely a lot less stressful than my old school, she said. While Bynum had to adjust to a new curriculum, junior Daniel Saxton had to adjust to theweather, not the classes. Saxton recently moved from Santa Cruz, CA. He lived in Bloomington formost of his life and moved to California for a year while his parents were on sabbatical. For him, it wasnot tough to come back to a place he had already been. Since he was already used to the curriculum atSouth, he did not have a hard adjustment, school was definitely harder in California, said Saxton. Theonly adjustment he had to deal with was the climate. I had to go out and buy a ton of pants because all Ihad was shorts, he said. But sophomore Logan Newlin-Blackwell had a different story. She transferred from BrownCounty over the summer. Newlin had to move to Bloomington because her parents wanted a newhouse. Newlin wasnt sure of her feelings about South, and she was ambivalent about the change. Idont know if I like it or not, its just really different here, said Newlin. For students who came from a home-school situation, the 8:00 first period bell was the hardestchallenge. Its hard to wake up early; Im still not used to it, said sophomore Sara Mills. The adjustmentwasnt as hard a transition as she thought it would have been; returning students really helped her out.Everyones been really nice here, it makes it a lot easier to get used to the school, said Mills.Regardless if you need to buy new pants or if you need to adjust to the curriculum, being a newstudent can be very challenging. However, returning South students helped the new students adjust tothe school so they too could share in Souths rich tradition.^^niTjrmrm/L il~-~/ ~*liBrJ^p-;ti^BWjMrjSl^Rf3Sv2lmmrl~]M*mk>JtcY^m*itaK ipC-jmfjm9W ■/jjMl•jL ;^ w Mmu.i W~™Souths new students: Row 1: Kali Greenburg, Devyn Purtlebaugh, Lindsey Billedo, Logan Purtlebaugh, SaraMills, Hillary Hunt, Joshua Fix, Sarah Bynum.
