Description: ^/heres No PlaceLike Home-comingSouths 2006 Homecoming WeekBy: Courtney CrowlWhen following the yellow brick road that was homecoming, South encountered manydistractions. Instead of the Wicked Witch and flying monkeys, students faced the journey throughI-STEP testing, a dance cut short by a prank, and the Friday night game which had to be played onSaturday because of severe thunderstorms.Spirit Week was a little disappointing because it was hard to get into it, said South StudentCouncil president, senior Cici Lemke. Not as many people participated as much as they would have ifit wasnt ISTEP week, she said.Despite the inconvenience, South students demonstrated a great level of enthusiasm anddisplayed it during the school pep rally on Friday before the football game against Lawrence Central.During the rally, students cheered as principals and counselors messily bobbed for beaded necklacesin tubs of whipped cream and the Panther mascot performed a dance rendition to Michael JacksonsThriller. Freshman Stephanie Weatherall, a member of the 2006 homecoming court, described being apart of the gathering. It was a good way to get introduced to the school, she said. After school let out, students were disappointed to hear that the football game against LawrenceCentral was rescheduled to Saturday before the dance due to bad weather. At the game, South gave upits undefeated record and suffered a 24-13 loss to the Bears.Even after a defeat, South continued to celebrate homecoming week by ending it with theannual school dance. Homecoming King Josh Tapp and Homecoming Queen Jessica Forney enjoyedthemselves, along with many other South students at the Wizard ojOz themed dance. I thought thetheme ended up being great, Lemke said. However, the dance ended early due to a prank that went wrong. Pranksters poured vegetableoil onto the dance floor. Junior Dakota Macky-McGee described her reaction to the practical joke: Isaw girls sobbing and holding their heads and I was like, What just happened? It was kind of frustrating for us because the dance had to end so early and we wanted people tohave as much fun as they could, said Lemke. All in all, this years homecoming received a thumbs up from the majority of the student body.Even though we lost the game and the court got rained out, it ended up being the best homecomingdance that Ive gone to, said Forney.anal Kts EXsngj [Bun^feW~9 OfHomecoming C^ p(^ ^ %) Student Life
