First evil grinof the day appears on my face.8 a.m. Eat breakfast, prepare lunch, listen to Johnny Cash.8:20 a.m. Begin my three-minute drive to school. Second evilgrin of the day appears on my face, realizing everyone else isalready in class. Listen to Golden Smog on the CD player.8:25 a.m. Safely arrive at school in teachers lounge. Make afew copies for class and go to my classroom to grade APgovernment issue reports. Enjoy the music of Uncle Tupelo.9:40 a.m. David Kang enters my classroom disrupting mydiligent grading with incessant questions. Receive kind gift ofTootsie Roll and Jolly Rancher from Vanessa Higgins.10 a.m. Begin teaching my three classes of the day. Actually, Iwatch my AP government classes take a multiple-choice test.The nervous tension is palpable.12 a.m. Enjoy my nicely prepared lunch before going to myfifth period government class where we tactfully try to discusscharacter and the president.1:30 a.m. Leave BHSS for Indiana University. Third evil grin ofthe day appears on my face with the realization that moststudents are still in class.1:55 p.m. Finally find some place to park at School ofEducation. Head up to fourth floor to work for Dr. MarthaMcCarthy, Education Leadership professor. The shirtswere tie-dyed to raisemoney for the Art Club.Justin Banks5:30 a.m. Wake up, greet the doggies. Start the coffee. Run ascalding bath with smelly-good bubble bath. Soak, relax, drinkstrong coffee. Wake up.6 a.m. Get ready for school, pick up around the house, packmy lunch and give the pups a treat before leaving.6:45 a.m. Drive to school, sing Ella Fitzgerald and Rasputinathe whole way.7 a.m. Get to school, get mail, put lunch in the fridge. Writelessons for the next two days. Check email, make a boatloadof xeroxes for all my classes. Grade basic art projects ... moregrading. Make hot chocolate to sip to break the gradingmonotony. Husband sweetly drops by a breakfast sandwich.9 a.m. Stained glass class-very mellow group. Run to Mr.Clarks class 100 times to get supplies Im out of. Helpeveryone cut glass, frame projects, solder and bandage fingers.Even I still average about a cut a day.10 a.m. Computer graphics-another very mellow class-a tinygroup of nine students (fourth period is a kindly payback forthis ...). Grade other class projects while students workquietly on their design projects. Endless grading ... zzzzz.11 a.m. LUNCH!!!! Time to netsurf!11:35 a.m. Stained glass-big crazy class of 36 people...AAAAAUGH! I need three of me to go around! Bizzy, bizzy!12:30 p.m. Basic art-A YOUNG bunch of students. Teachthem how to paint. Paint, Jane, paint! Keep two students afterclass for acting up while I gave a demonstration.1:30 p.m. Photography-conduct a class critique of photoassignment. Get amazed by the class work, then have todisappoint the class with the announcement of a researchproject. *sigh*2:30 p.m. Art Club meeting-how to get a group of over-sleepers to get baked goods to school by 7 a.m.(cont. on paqe I 44)Faculty 143A |
