I heard the most painful noise of the day, thealarm clock.6:45 a.m. Take Louis the 1-year old Weimarauer dog outside.6:50 a.m. Start the process of being presentable. (Shave,shower, iron clothes)7:25 a.m. Fixed my usual breakfast, which includes one pieceof toast and a glass of orange juice. Also, I fixed breakfast fortwo of my three daughters, Bailey (9) and Lexie (3). I guessStephanie refuses to eat my wonderful cuisine.7:40 a.m. I took Lexie to day care, and then made my way toBHSS (on Bloomingtons finest roads).8 a.m. Spent my time during my prep (Block 1) completingunfinished paper work.9:33 a.m.- 2:30 p.m. Taught U.S. history during Blocks 2,3,4.3 p.m. Left BHSS and went to pick up Lexie at her day care.3:25 p.m. Greeted Bailey as she got off the bus from school.3:40 p.m. Played with Louis in the yard.3:50 p.m. Played football pass with Bailey.4:15 p.m. Colored with Lexie.4:30 p.m. Washed a load of laundry, folded towels and helpedclean up messes around the house.5:30 p.m. Went to the post office and mailed bills.6-7 p.m. Helped prepare dinner and ate with family.7:30 p.m. Cleaned up kitchen.8 p.m. Took Bailey to basketball practice.8:15 p.m. Graded papers.9 p.m. Picked up Bailey from basketball practice.9:15 p.m. Worked on computer, making plans for the nextdays assignments and activities.10:15 p.m. Watched ESPN Sportscenter.11 p.m. Got ready for bed. This is actually earlier then usual.Usually it is 11:30-12:00.Mrs. CarlaGardnerThursday,Nov. 11,1 999Junior Lindsay Woodreceives help on a paperin fifth period Englishfrom Mrs. Carla Gardner.Gardner taught twomorning block classesand one traditional classin the afternoon.3 a.m. I am awake thinking about a lesson. UurenDemming5 a.m. Nap for 15 minutes; get up, let dog out, breakfast,shower, iron, dress, read paper, go over notes, kiss dog, hubbygood-bye and get to school.7:10 a.m. No door key; xerox two handouts, lesson, find Nancyborrow key, run to room, run back to refrigerator to depositlunch, return key, run to mailbox, back to room, write agendason board for my three different classes, arrange materials to behanded out, arrange desks for Block 1 modified socraticseminar, answer questions, run to door to monitor hall.8 a.m. Big question is debated for 45 minutes; most engage;some catching on; a few are dedicatedly resisting; a couple playa video game, get talked to later, try to keep other 27 kids ontask. Cant be all things to all kids; frustrating. Try to grade,too many kids asking too many questions, get nothing done.9:33 a.m. Next class, challenging kids as many are repeatingfreshman English (over 1/3 of class): need at least threelessons per day to engage them; doing grammar; they are lost; Itried to cram too much in—kids are lost or struggling; many donot have whats called task commitment, especially whenthey dont see the immediate reward (hold ISTEP over them likethe lead balloon it is; barely helps); their brains are fried.11-12:30 p.m. Prep. Run club money to ECA account; gathernext weeks assignments for a student who will be absent,(sorry I dont have a package, but so much of what I do arisesfrom what a class that day reveals must be done next day, soall I can do is throw worksheets her way and tell her what toread).
