Along with sleeping in andgoing on vacations, getting a job was onthe agenda of several teenagers duringthe summertime.Although students managed to get asummer job, some realized that survivingthrough the bad pay and strict bosses wasdifficult.I worked at The Pointe Golf andTennis Resort. I helped people load theirgolf bags onto carts, washed the carts andrecharged them when they were done. Themoney was really bad, and thats why Iquit. The bosses were mean, too, juniorBrent Owens said.Many peoplereceived help infinding their job, * T ,whether it was from cantaloupe. 1 wasn ta friend or acompanyspecializing inand all of the sudden ipeople got a job in order to stay in touchwith all their friends. The downside ofthis meant staying inside.I worked at the Buckle so that I couldget some extra money. I hated alwayshaving to be indoors on really nice days.Then I was a waitress at the GoldenCorral. I worked with a lot of people fromschool which was fun, senior SolangeNorris said.Some people even tried to juggle twojobs at once, only to find that it wasnt aseasy as they expected.Bagging groceries and pushingmops...one of my most interestingsummers yet. I started bagging at Mr. Dsand stayed there for about a year or so.Then an older woman asked me to workfor her: vacuuming,...I was cuttingfinding jobs.I had to stuffcotton into theselittle tubes, withfruit fly cultures inreally paying attentionand all of the suddensliced a big chunk offiruu ny cultures in i r, j_i ithem for the biology Hiy let t thUITl Dlab at IU. The workforce developmentprogram got me the job, junior JasonAishe said.Jobs were not just about money, butinstead a way of preventing boredom fromsetting in. Many people were determinedto always stay busy during the summer.I like to stay active, so Id work foreight hours, and since I only had practicetwo times a week, I didnt want to getbored. I worked at Indiana MRI, puttingtogether folders and files for the patientsentering, sophomore Ashley Fuller said.The IU campus became a place wherestudents found work, as they devotedtheir time assisting the professors anddoctors in the research clinics.I worked at the IU smoking surveyclinic. I filed and tracked down phonenumbers for the psychologists there tryingto figure out why people start smoking. Ichose the job because two of my friendsparents are psychologists in the program.I think they must have been findingsomething out because they have beenfunded for 20 years, freshman ReginaHarlig said.Even though school was out, manysweeping, mopping,watering and othersuch tasks. I triedto have both jobsfor a while, but itjust didnt workout. So now I workafternoons andweekends, and Imake as much in aday as I did at Mr.Ds every weekend,junior James Buhlssaid.Along with somejobs came the risk of making even theslightest mistake and becoming injured.Some students had to overcome theburdens of on the job injury andcontinue the job.I was working at the hospital, and Iwas cutting cantaloupe. I wasnt reallypaying attention and all of the sudden Isliced a big chunk off my left thumb. Mysupervisor took me to the ER, and I hadto wait an hour before they could tape itup, because if they put stitches in itwould have torn the skin that washanging off. They had to wrap my thumband wrist in gauze for two weeks, and Iwas called thumb from then on, seniorAmber Hatton said.Even though there were manydownsides to jobs, lots of people stuckwith the trials and tribulations, and mostgot some extra money. Some paid for anew car and its bills, while others justwanted some extra cash.
