The lakewas a popular getaway that allowedstudents to cool off from the summerheat.News Bitsby Jordan GarnerBloomington Welcomes the Dalai LamaSpreading a message of world peace and harmony, the Dalai Lama visited Bloomington Aug. l7-28.TheDalai Lama is recognized as the spiritual leader of the Buddhist religion and was previously awarded theNobel Prize for peace. Highlighting his visit was a lecture on Ethics of the New Millennium given atAssembly Hall and the I I-day Kalachakra ceremony held at the Tibetan cultural center.The Kalachakra isthe highest form of Buddhist meditation and is dedicated to creating peace and harmony.Normally when you get a bunch of people together there is a lot of tension, but it was serene. It wasso peaceful; it was very Zen, senior Tom Rampley said.Activities making up the Kalachakra include ritual preparation, preliminary teachings, studentpreparation and the Kalachakra initiation. As part of the ceremony, a Mandala sand painting is created anddestroyed to symbolize the impermanence of life. In attendance at the ceremony were celebrities StevenSeagal, Richard Gere and Harrison Ford.Road ConstructionAs the summer came to an end and school went into session, a number of streets and intersectionswere given make-overs. Projects included the roundabout constructed at the intersection of High,Winslow and Rogers, the work on the Kirkwood streetscape and the installment of lights at theintersection of Rogers and Country Club.The finished roundabout improved traffic flow and eased manystudents commute to school.Senior Dawnita Brown had an accident at the intersection of High, Winslow and Rogers, before theroundabout was constructed.I was at the stop sign and there was guy who had his turn signal on, so I pulled out, but he didnt turn.After my wreck all the cops said,I think were going to do something about ft, so they built a roundabout,Brown said.Travel after the completion of the construction projects was smoother and safer for studentscommuting to school and around Bloomington.Justin Banks4
