We wouldbe made to wear a uniform. No tank tops wouldbe allowed. Shorts could not fall lower than oneshands. With the coming of our new principal alsocame concerns over dress policies he might enforce. These fears were finally addressed at class meetings, when Administrative Assistant Mr.George Finley briefly spoke to some students about the topic. In speaking to the freshmanand sophomore classes, he alluded that students should not wear any clothes thatrevealed shoulders. This led to further confusion. Are tank tops not allowed? Are onlyfreshmen and sophomores prohibited from wearing them? That day was so hectic. I was running from place to place, and I didnt have anythingplanned to say. I just said what was at the top of my head. I understand I made thingsconfusing for students, but they should just look in the student handbook. I think thatanything we say [about the dress code] should be backed in writing, Mr. Finley said. The handbook stated that inappropriate attireincludes hats or head coverings, shorts or skirtsthat are above mid-thigh, midriffs, and clothing thathas offensive messages. In the future the dress code will be looked at byan assortment of people . I see a committee ofteachers, parents and students in a group makingdecisions, Finley said.Lauren DemmingDiscovery of:: Pacific Sunwear ::Because of the limited amount of shopping inBloomington, when a new store opens, studentsseem to flock to the store within a few weeks ofits opening. That was how things worked forPacific Sunwear, located on the College Mallseastside near LS Ayres. The store featured thelatest trends including Hawaiian prints, flaredjeans and surf shirts. It didnt take long fortheir clothes to be seen on students throughoutthe hallways.I saw the store in Indy, and I thought thatthey had pretty cool clothes so I decided to go. Iended up buying a shirt, senior Tiffany Kraesesaid.by Lauren Humes6 Gothic • july august 1999 |
