Description: From tye-dying fabrics to throwing clay pots, art classesinvite students into a world beyond academicss she walks up the long vocational hallway, seniorAlicia Rogers becomes excited about theupcoming classroom events. At the top ofthe ramp she can see a network of artistswaiting for her to join them.Rogers has experienced many forms of art in theelective classes that she has taken since her freshman year.Stained glass was my favorite out of ceramics,stained glass, calligraphy and computer graphics,Rogers said. ^ ^A <A/r„„^. „..^ „i iwork by putting our best prints on the board in theroom, Shepperd said.Many students appreciated the chance to express theirartistic side in a school environment. For example, seniorApril Detwiler used to be home schooled but switchedto public school in search of something more.I wanted to go to a public school so I couldtake an art class. Creativity ^Most art classes havea series of eclectic projects that are assigned to thestudents in the class. Sophomore Kara Braschexperienced this in her computer graphics class firstsemester.We didnt do anything big, just a lot of little things,like CD covers, Brasch said.Not only did students have the chance to create theirown mini-masterpieces, but they were also given theopportunity to display their work. Junior Kelly Shepperdenjoyed seeing her photographs presented on thephotography classroom wall.My favorite part was showing other people ourand artcant be taught. You cant alwaysteach yourself art, so we need a place to learn it,Detwiler said.Detwiler is not the only one who felt art wasimportant to focus on in school. Sophomore AprilRamsay, who took Drawing 1 first semester, views suchclasses as a place where artists can pursue their passionslike athletes have the chance to do at school. Its nice tohave a class for them.Many students had a passion for learning art, not onlyto improve their skills but their overall ability to thinkcreatively.
