By SofieConnerStudents take steps to try to figure outthe twists and turns of drivingAll teenagersanticipate gettingtheir drivers license. They imagine what itwill feel like to pullout onto the roadfor the first timewithout a parent orinstructor in the carwith them. They longto be free to drivethemselves and theirfriends around. However, theprocess students gothrough to get fromdreaming abouthaving their licenseto cruising thestreets on their ownis often consideredlengthy andcomplicated.Much to theirdismay, students areforced to wait fortheir 16th birthdayto approach beforethey can get behindthe wheel.I rememberliterally countingdown the days to getmy drivers license; itwas like waiting forChristmas to come, junior Erica Ulreysaid.Once the dayarrived for one to gettheir license all theyhad to do was getpast the Bureau ofMotor Vehicles. So for acouple of days Iwould stall everytime I came to a stopsign. It was soawful, junior NaomiForss said.Sometimesstudents weredisappointed to findthat driving wasntall that it wascracked up to be.Students often gotstuck paying for gas, running errands fortheir parents, orchauffeuring theirfriends around.I was the firstone of my friends toget my license and Iwas always the onedriving everyonearound and using upmy gas, senior KimEads said. But itwas still better thannot having it at all.Students also hadto work to avoidgetting into a wreck.(Senior) KeelyStevens and I bothgot our licenses onthe same day, andthen two weeks laterwe hit each other, senior Erin Simmonssaid. As studentsdiscovered, theprivilege of drivingindependently alsohad its downside.Along with their newfreedom cameresponsibilities, which they had tolearn to accept inorder to enjoy drivingto its fullest.STUDENT LIFES LITTLE INSTRUCTIONSOn parking at school:Always remember thebenefits of creative parking.-senior Geeta KharkarNotable QuotablesWhat is your biggest driving pet peeve?I hate it when people flip their brightsat you and your brights arent even on.seniorJosh RichardsonThe worst thingis when someonepulls out in front of you and then theygo, like, 20 miles below the speed limit.seniorRebecca CordI hate people who are impatient atstoplights and they inch up, like itsgoing to make the light turn green...34 student lifespread design by ashley davidson |
