uccessFor Bloomington Souths Academic Decathalon team, practicebegan early in the school year. The nine member team, led by Coach RuthGranich, not only practiced many hours after school, but they also camein early before school to learn the academic material that would later helpthem make it to National.The teams first big win came on January 28 when they won thelarge school division at regionals. Souths team captured 71 out of apossible 90 medals at regionals. Wining Regionals was a greataccomplishment, but next came the state competition.At State Souths Decathalon team competed in nine events andthe Super Quiz. The events were economics, fine arts, language andliterature, math, science, social studies, essay, interview, and speech, withthe Super Quiz topic being Biotechnology. The theme of the Statecompetition was Wellness and South did do very well. They went on towin State.The final competition, Nationals, was held in Chicago April 21-23. Seniors Diana Coffa and Elenor Rust earned individual metals and theteam placed 13th overall in the Nation with a third place finish in theMidwest division.Preparation for National was rigorous. It was a lot of hard work,but it was worth it, stated Coffa. The team spent more than 10 hours aweek studying, reading, and teaching to prepare for the competition inChicago.In comparison to others we were competing with some of thebrightest people in the nation, I think we did relatively well, stated SarahCummins. Granich added, The team worked really hard this year.
