Iplan on continuing to studyGerman and I want to goback to Germany someday, said Sater.Junior Gretchen Morgansays she took Spanishbecause there are manySpanish-speaking people inthe U.S, today. Languagesnot only help us to understand foreign cultures, butCollin Garcia, JeremyBrantlinger, and Aaron Powellmeet new friends on the beachesof the Mediterranean.Jennifer McGlasson is overjoyed to be waiting in line at aSpanish bank.Sarah Tansey, Pete Johns, Jennifer McGlasson, Wendy Ware, JillSummers, and Anna Millican havea Coke and a smile in a Spanishrestaurant.can be used to understandour own language better.Morgan, who also took twoyears of Latin, comment-ed,It helped me understand English better as wellas the Roman culture.Junior Elizabeth Sluderdecided to take French because her friends were taking it. Students who take aforeign language generallylearn something about thatculture. I just like learningFrench and appreciating aforeign country, saidSluder.Taking a foreign languageprepares students to travelto a foreign country. Whenyou know the language yougo less as a tourist andmore to learn the culture,said Mrs. Judy Morrow, Foreign Language departmentchairperson.Each language class participated in special culturalactivities. For instance, theFrench classes had a baking day when they preparedFrench foods. Spanishclasses were treated with apinata, a large papier ma-che object filled with candy.The German classes had aparty celebrating the reunification of East and WestGermany after 45 years ofseparation.34 / ACADEMICS
