The Panther Regiment marching band and thefirst jazz band got to showcase their talents and represent the school in many competitions and performancesin 1989-90.The Panther Regimentwas sitting on a powderkeg, according to instructorTrent Evans. The showstheme was developed aroundThe Blues Brothers, amovie. Musical selectionsfeatured Cant Turn YouLoose, Rawhide, ShakeA Tail Feather, and a bluesrendition of Do You WantTo Dance. The fast-pacedshow was filled with energy,and included a dance by theentire band and the bopstep, which members referred to as the Dubie special.From band camp in June,to the final competition inOctober, they worked hard.Amira Sabbagh liked the waythe group worked together.Its possible to belong to agroup and keep your identity, she said.The biggest payoffs arenot the awards, said BillyWoods. When people giveus a standing ovation andcheer like theres no tomorrow, you feel so good youcould explode. However,the regiment won its share ofawards. They placed first intheir class twice and thirdthree times. Two Drum Major awards and a first in general effect, music, colorguard, and percussion wereother acknowledgments oftheir success.The jazz bands good reputation kept them in demandfor most of the year. Theywere asked to play at variouscommunity functions andconvalescent centers, as wellas at the Older AmericansValentines Day dance and atUnion Station in Indianapolis.
