Description: y>.Helping othersSTAND, an acronym forStudents Toward a New Direction, was established during the 1985-86 school year.Since that time membershave participated in a widevariety of educational andsupport activities. Some ofthese activities included Indiana Teen Institute, a presentation for the BHSS student body by members ofMADD (Mothers AgainstDrunk Driving), and DARE(Drug Abuse Resistance Education). A class in self-defense was offered to thefaculty and students. One ofthe groups most publicizedactivities was Red RibbonWeek.The BHSS chapter ofSTAND was listed in the Indiana Prevention ResourceCenter for Substane AbusePrograms listing for outstanding programs in thestate.The students involved inFirst row: Jean Spring Rain, StaciRyser and Jennifer Cease. Secondrow: Domonica McPheeters, KatyHartman, Amy Harner,Alma Evans and Esther Powers.Back row: Leslie Henke and JanetNowling, sponsors, Jill Seubert andDeborah Mackay.BOP! WHAM! POW! DomenicaMcPheeters and Esther Powerslearn how to deal with crooks in aself-defense workshop.STAND are very caring individuals who want to helpother teens and receive support from their peers, whoare also members, commented member Staci Ryser.Their goal was to help makethe adolescent years easierfor teenagers through education, alternative activitiesand support from goodfreinds. STAND let me discover new things about myself in terms of leadership,replied Amy Harner.The heads of the committee were president, AmyHarner; vice-president,Dominique MacPheeters;secretary, Katie Hartmanand treasurer, Esther Powers.
