Description: Gym branches outFor the first time in a number of years, BHSS physical education classes werenot graded on a pass-failbasis. Instead, students received letter grades as theydid in their academic classes. According to P.E. teacher Ruth Lewis, the changewas made in order toevaluate students skill level in sports and fitness.I think giving a lettergrade for physical ability isunfair. If you participate andcooperate but you donthappen to be as athletic assomeone else, your grade isstill lower than theirs, saidstudent Sherry Pitman. Its awful, agreed Tammy Clendening, anotherphysical education student.Physical education is a re-auired class, The school feelsthat it is necessary to develop physical fitness andawareness and knowledgeof physical fitness, saidLewis. The P.E. covered many different sports last year. In addition to the usual sports —football, swimming, badmit-ton, tennis, track, softball,weight-lifting, and basketball — the students traveledoutside the school to takepart in less ordinary sports. They went to a bowling alley, where the studentslearned how to bowl andkeep score. During thecolder parts of the schoolyear, students visited thenearby Frank Southern ice-skating rink. They learnedfrom the Frank Southern staffhow to skate both backward and forward. When theweather was warm, theclasses learned golf. Theywent to the Indiana University Driving Range to practice their swings. The boys and girls classescovered the same sportswith only one exception: theboys learned wrestling whilethe girls learned gymnastics.Ruth Lewis and Georgia Tiddwere the girls P.E. teachers;Larry Williams and Greir Werner were the boys teachers.During the gym class swimmingunit, a diver flings himself into thepool.Carly Philpot amputates a lungfrom a model in gym class.Erik Coyne fakes out his opponent in a gym class soccergame.63
