Description: HARRY POTTERAND THE CHAMBEROF BOOKSMany clubs at South operate with the intention of creatinga better community. One of the South clubs with this aimis the Harry Potter Club which helps to build acommunity for people who are really passionate aboutreading and spread that passion through things like ourbook drive, co-president junior Isabel Fernandez said. While it has been a staple of the club for years, thisyear, the book drive went through a reorganization processthat changed how the club handled donated books. In thepast, the club had collected books and given them to anelementary school library, but this year each kid wasable to pick out one book and take it home for free, making reading more accessible to them, Fernandezexplained. With this in mind, the club members decided thatinstead of simply donating the books to a local school, they would run a book drive. This time, we wanted toutilize the clubs ability to do things [in the community],co-president junior Veera Shah said. Each year, Harry Potter Club selects the elementaryschool with the most need to donate books to. This year, the books collected went to Grandview Elementary.Grandview was chosen because we have connectionsEvery year, the Harry Potter Club organizesa book drive to benefit MCCSC students. This year, the club members did this byhosting a book fair for the students ofGrandview Elementary.there, and it is one of the schools where there arent manykids that can afford books, Shah said. The club also had to strategize to promote the bookdrive in order to maximize the number of books received.Along with putting up flyers around the school, they set updrop-off points throughout town for people to drop donatethe books. This was a change for the club because therehave never been drop off points throughout town before;its always been isolated to South, co-president juniorElena Stalnaker said. One of these drop-offs occurred at a bake sale theclub hosted at Bloomington Hardware. Club members setup a table with different treats and asked for donations ofboth books and money. The monetary donations will beused to purchase more books to give to the children ofGrandview Elementary as well as fund the clubs otherevents such as the Yule Ball.In the end, the drive was a success. On January 30,2017, the Harry Potter Club executives as well as otherclub members went to Grandview during the school day toset up tables of books, so the children could come andselect one they wanted to take home.- CLANCY LYLESa.D LU£* h- r-D<Q Z<GrNe? 9On Friday, January 20, 2017, Donald J.
