(Students To-ward A New Direction)was formed in 1985 afterstudents requested a support group of teens. Thepurpose of S.T.A.N.D. is tofacilitate educational andpersonal growth by bringing together teens andprofessionals to share information, develop specificskills, and examine feelings^and attitudes about substance misuse and relatedproblems.S.T.A.N.D. members developed educational programs and alternatives activities within our schoolsand community. Membership increased, raising theinvolvement in various projects and activities. Someof those activities were, attending the Indiana TeenInstiute (I.T.I.), HoosiersAgainst Drunk Driving(H.A.D.D.), and supportingthe Red Ribbon Campaignand National Drunk andDrugged Driving Awareness week (3-D week).Several members tookpart in community projectssuch as the Boys Club Planning Committee, Parks andRecreation Youth AdivisoryCouncil, the 92.3 radio talkshow, Drug Awareness andResistance Education(D.A.R.E.), and future ofOur Youth forums. Othermembers made presentations to Batchelor MiddleSchool students and classes at South.The students involved inS.T.A.N.D. are individualswho want to help eachother by giving and receiving support. Our goal is tohelp make the teen yearseasier for all through education, alternative activities, and support fromfriends, said STAND member Scott Sowder.An alternative activity,for some students at Southis the Ski Club. This yearswarm weather conditionsmade it hard for most resorts to keep snow on theground. Most of us did nothave a chance to get outand use our passes, andthat meant that we justwasted our money, commented an upset member,Jackie Thompson.Another activity was thechess club. It hosted a regional tournament onMarch 4, 1989. Three BHSSteams competed. Thetournament was the culmination of many weeks ofpractice for the chess club.For preparation, the chessclub members went overtheir strategies, talked to asenior master, and playedmany games of chess.A final activity was thewrestlerettes, who help outat wrestling matches bykeeping statistics andboosting team spirit.Vice president of STAND SaraLaughlin shows an expression ofdisgust towards kids on drugs.43
