Area Champs...Improvement marks seasonFinishing the season with arecord of 10-16, the girls varsityvolleyball team claimed bragging rights as city and countychamps after defeatingEdgewood during the regularseason and beating North twice,in a regular season game and aSCC game.The team improved as theyear progressed and the playersreally began to come togetheras a team, said Coach GeorgiaTidd.Five seniors led the team thisyear; Eva Sullivan, Dee Grissomand Gretchen Elkins, performing as passers for the team. Theyalso contributed in the servingdepartment. Susan Skirvin andSuzie Hollenback were hittersand blockers. Tidd said Hollenback progressed throughout theseason and had a very goodyear. Skirvin, the most experienced senior on the team,was commended for a good all-around game.Junior Jill Nettleton was notedby Tidd as the teams steadiestpasser and server. She led theteam in aces. Junior Lori Deeswas described as a strong,powerful hitter. When she hadan outstanding hitting night, theteam was pretty tough to beat,Tidd added. Junior Pat Holmesimproved and gained confidence as a hitter and ablocker, she added also.Sophomore Amy Poland wascommended for her ability tocome in off the bench and perform well in clutch situations.Tidd was really pleased with thesetting of sophomores KathyBailey and Erin McGarvey.They progressed and gained alot of experience this year. Being just sophomores, they havetwo more years to contribute tothe team, Tidd said.Sophomore Kristi Saunders alsocame along well in the settingdepartment.
