Golf team reaches stateImproved play wins matchesFor the first time in 14 years, the South boys golf team reached the state tournament. Thisaccomplished one of coachMike Riggles three goals for theseason.Early in the 87 season Riggleset the goals which were to getto and out of the regional, which had been a barrier in thepast, and to win the South Central Conference (SCC) tournament. All these goals were metby the team.According to Riggle, finishingfirst in the SCC was the highlightof the 87 season. With the SCCchampionship, South clinchedthe all-sports trophy, taking itaway from Columbus Northwho had been ranked seventhin the state at the time. In addition, the Panthers upset thenumber one ranked Seymourteam. The last time South qualifiedfor the state tournament was in1973. They finished third. The state meet was the lowpoint of the season, said Riggle. We got off to a really badstart; that hindered us a lot. Ifwe had just shot our normalgame we would have been inthe thick of the hunt, Rigglesaid. South failed to get out ofthe first days round.Riggle attributed the sub-par performance to the factthat the team had not made itout of sectional play before andsuddenly had a shot at the statetitle.Key roles in the teams success were played by seniorsKevin Will, captain, and TroyGillespe, B-man. Troy playedhis best matches in the biggestmeets and had good comebacksin the SCC, sectional, andregional, said Riggle. Most improved player for theseason was Jimmy Wilson whodropped his score from themid 90s his freshman year to thelow 80s in his senior year, Riggle said. And as for the suddenimpact player, that was EricKoler, remarked Riggle. This years team was loadedwith good seniors who hadfrustrating sophomore andjunior years because they werenot ready to play as a team,Riggle said. These seniors were a greatgroup to work with and theyunderstood their responsibility. They did not worry about theirposition on the team, they justwanted to be the best theycould, said Riggle.Putting takes practice, KevinWill shows that he has practicedhard and has putting down byhitting the ball into the hole.Walking from one hole toanother gives players time tothink of strategies to improvetheir game. Jim Wilson contemplates as he walks. Perhapsfewer shots to get the ball intothe hole would work?Boys Golf 97 |
