Description:	For spirit leaders .. .Coming up Panther purpleMost people think of thefall as subtle colors andquiet weekends. Not onthe southside of town!There purple and whiteblossom in full force as thePanther cheerleaders andpompettes come to life.Purple and whiteuniforms, pompoms andcrepe paper decorationsbloom in profusion as Panther cheerleaders andpompettes do theirthing. Fancy step routinesand new catchy cheersseem to be effortlesslyperformed with boundlessenergy.Not so! For both squadsthe seasons preparationbegins during the hotsultry days of July andAugust. At summer campssponsored by the NationalCheerleaders Association,South cheerleaders andpompettes learn newroutines and competeagainst squads from surrounding schools andstates.The contests are highlycompetitive and the girlstake them seriously, saidEdwyna Nolan pompettesponsor. A lot of preparation and practice goes intocamp and competitionagainst other schools,said Jan Elkins,cheerleader sponsor.Both Panther squadsbrought home awards. Thecheerleaders werenominated for the Awardof Excellence and thepompettes brought homea trophy for aperformance.Cheerleaders KellyMcWilliams and TamiEaston were nominated forMiss Cheerleader withMcWilliams making it tothe final three. KellyChambers was nominatedAil-American Cheerleader,the highest honor. Two ofthe pompettes, AngieEaston and Kari Prewitt,were nominated for theSuperstar Drill Team.POMPETTES.
