Both the Frenchand Spanish clubs sponsoredexchange programs and overallhad lots of fun.Planning for next years exchange was one of the majorobjectives of this years Germanclub, according to sponsor KayVilla-Garcia. The club met off-and-on throughout the schoolyear and worked on planningnext years exchange. We alsochallenged the Latin club to abowling match at the Union.The Latin club held monthlymeetings at local Italianrestaurants, including Lesliesand The Trojan Horse. The major event of the year for the clubwas a summer trip to Italy, forthose interested.Latin club sponsor, Joann Ar-ther said foreign language clubsgive students a chance to meetout of school for social andcultural functions.Theyre enjoyable, saidsophomore Pat Lumbley, a Latinclub officer. Theyre a goodway to get to know classmatesbetter. They are a good ideabecause you can meet newpeople that you ordinarilywould not meet.Language clubs are goodbecause they allow us to dothings we cant do in class,Morrow concluded. Theyrestudent-directed rather thanteacher-directed.The Spanish Club, along withother foreign language clubs atSouth, concentrate on culturesalong with the languages.At first glance it is difficult to tellif French teacher Janet Nowlingis showing off her obvioustongue skills or is showing heropinion of French cuisine.Foreign Language Clubs 43 |
