Description: Boys advance to sweet 16The 1984-1985 varsity boysbasketball team had the bestyear for a South team in 14years. Coach J. R. Holmes ledthe Panthers all the way tosemi-state, narrowly missingthe Final Four.South accumulated a recordof 18-2 during the regularseason, losing only to Indianapolis Cathedral and Columbus North. After the sectionals, regionals, and semi-state their overall record was23-3 after losing to Richmondin a final 16 game. The firstsemi-state game.In the regionals the Pantherswiped Columbus East out ofthe semi-state picture with a76-79 victory and then theydefeated Center Grove thefollowing night by a score of71-50, thus advancing tosemi-state — the SweetSixteen..At semi-state South wasdefeated by Richmond in theirfirst game, 67-61 in overtime.Richmond eventually lost toMarion in the state-championship game.Senior Chris Bomba prettymuch summed up the teamsfeelings. We could have donemuch better, but we did have agreat season, he said. Theteam, and especially thegraduating seniors, were slightly disappointed because theFinal Four eluded them, according to Bomba, but reflectingback on the season most feltthat the season was exceptional. The team had a lot ofpressure put upon it, saidcoach Holmes, yet they stillplayed very well.The teams success wasbeneficial to the students, theschool, and community. Support for the boys was incredible. The fans really helped topush the team to victory,Bomba said.South lost six seniors tograduation this year. Theywere: Bomba, Andy Walker, Billy Beggs, Pat Poland, TonyJackson, and Steve McDay.The Panthers run onto the courtbefore a 1985 game.
