Finals causechaotic weekOne week each year is setapart from all others. It is aweek of chaos and one of fear.It is finals week. Its not a coincidence thatthe word final exam seemsso final. Final exams can eithermake you or they can breakyou. It is for this reason thatduring finals week everybodystudies earnestly, possiblyopening their textbooks for thefirst time, or frantically copyingsomeone elses notes. To learn the material for herfinal exam, a sophomore said,I pulled two all-nighters studying for tests in classes I hadalmost forgotten I was taking. Ithink I opened my textbook forthe first time the night beforemy final. However, there are othermethods of making it throughfinals week without foregoingsleep. Sophomore Steve Arthur gave his advice on surviving the week.Survivals Week lasts fourdays so youve got to paceyourself, this means everyevening you stay up you haveto have a few essential andbasic items—the first beingone large Dominos pizza withdouble-cheese and pepperoni.Next you need two six-packs ofMountain Dew or Mello Yello(any high caffeine drink), agood jam box and Led ZepplinII and IV.South teacher Don Beaversaid that before a final examstudents tend to cram.Beaver said that althoughcramming works for some people, it doesnt for all. He suggested regular and continuousstudy as an alternative. Spending 15 minutes every fewnights when you have havenothing to do is usually moreeffective than cramming.Despite all the suffering andstudying needed for finalsweek, one junior said, Thegreat thing about finals week isthat you get to party beforefinals and the week after finals. Then you get to party afterreport come out.So, maybe finals arent thatbad after all. Though they canbring you down a letter grade, they can also bring you up oneand give you a chance to showyour worth. As one Latinphrase goes finis coronatopus—the final crowns thework.Junior Jill Habbe practices writing anessay for her social studies final exam. Many students found that the Southlibrary was an ideal spot to do somelast minute cramming for exams. Its hard enough to study for a final inones native language, let alone studyfor one in Spanish. But this is just whatsenior Mark Dehon had to do when studying for one of his finals.50 Finals |
