save the SOles_. i nThe 16th annual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer race was hosted on September 26th at the IndianUniversity Memorial Stadium. South students participated to support cancer research.For 16 years, Hoosiers Outrun Cancer (HOC)has been a major supporter of The Olcott Center,which raises funds and awareness for cancerpatients in Bloomington. Attended by thousandsof runners and walkers for the cure, this race isone of the biggest community draws inBloomington. South students joined around5,000 participants on Saturday, September 26.The run was no short of a massive success,raising just over $220,000 from the participantsand sponsors.While some South students went for funwith their friends, other students ran to honorthe lives of those who battled or are battlingcancer. Junior Abigail Eads, member of the girlsbasketball team, participated in HOC with therest of her teammates in memory of CoachWinters mother, who passed due to pancreaticcancer. It was a lot of fun to see everyone comeout and support a great cause, Eads said. Othermembers of the team ran with Eads in a jointeffort to support their coach and get a run inbefore practice. Eads was glad that the teamcould show their coach support during a hardtime. Getting to do it as a team was a goodbonding experience that meant a lot to CoachWinters, so it was fun. The girls basketball teamraised over $600 for the Olcott center.Sophomore Baileigh Goodlett also ran thisyear in honor of her grandfather, a survivor ofSquamous Cell Carcinoma. Goodlett has run theHOC 5k every year for eight years-every year thather grandfather has been in remission. Herfavorite part of the race is seeing all the redshirts which signify that the people wearing themhave beaten or are fighting against cancer.Each shirt is a sign of hope, Goodlett said. Assomeone whos family has been affected bycancer, its an incredible feeling to know that somany people come together to raise moneytowards beating it. The HOC event will continueto inspire and encourage those who have beenaffected by cancer for many years to come.- ELLA NEEDBvct |
