TankersovercomehardshipsSouth tankers overcame many hardships this year to end the regular seasonwith a 3-6 record. The Panthers, underthe direction of Coach Ed Talley, werehandicapped by illness and lack of facilities.Starting out the season, crosstownrival Bloomington North inched past thePanthers by one point. In the ColumbusNorth Relays, South came in third placeand set a meet record in the 200 butterfly relay.The South tankers then beat a strongCarmel team, led by double victoriesfrom sophomore Kevin Rillo and juniorDave Edgeworth. In the South CentralConference meet, the Panthers capturedfifth place, competing against some verystrong teams. Sophomore Doug Koyanagi had an individual best in the 200 individual medley as did senior Steve Furr inthe 100 butterfly.Coach Talley was aided by assistantcoaches Jim Graft and Carey Stapleton,along with manager Jeannie Barr.According to Talley, the early part ofthe season was hampered by the lack ofa pool.
