Description: Miscellaneous, etc.Countyseat getsface liftIf one was to walkdowntown Bloomingtonpast the MonroeCounty Courthouse, itmight come to onesattention that theCourthouse looked as ifit had received a facelift.From November of1983 until October of1984, the MonroeCounty Courthouse indowntown Bloomingtonunderwent a completerenovation.Origianlly built in1908, the Courthouseseemed to many to be ahistorical landmark.Renovation of thebuilding included agutting of the entirestructure, completerebuilding of the walls,new electrical wiring,plumbing, air-conditioning, andheating systems wereinstalled, and therotunda inside thecourthouse wasopened. All of thesetook place at a cost ofnearly two milliondollars.The question of torenovate or not torenovate was a hot itemaround Bloomington.Money to fund therenovation was almostentirely raised by thesale of such items asT-shirts and buttons, aswell as through privatedonations.Citizens observe the newly opened rotunda at the courthouse.New cable is popularDuring the summerof 1984, 10 new cablestations and two paymovie stations wereintroduced toBloomingtons cablesubscribers.The content of thenew programs rangesfrom housekeeping tovideos, doubling theamount of availabletelevision exposure.Although studentresponse to thesechannels has beenbasically favorable,most students say theyhave not watched moretelevision because ofthe channels. I think Iwatch less TV now,said junior Gina Viola,because most of thechannels are so stupidthat I am turned off totelevision.
