■Miscellaneous, etc.PoliticianseducationDuring the firstlegislative session of1984, a bill was passedthat was designed tomake high schooleducation in Indianabetter. The mainobjective was increasedwork time.Governor Orr andthe State Departmentof Education felt thatinterruptions such aspep sessions, convocations, and fieldtrips took too muchtime away from theactual learningexperience. Also introduced wasthe suggestion of amandatory 360 hoursper week in class.Teachers were told toteach for an entire 60-minute period, sendingany work home withstudents. A mandatoryhomework bill was alsointroduced, but wasdefeated. In late March of1984, however, a billwas passed repealingthe mandatory 360hours per week. Thenumber of total hoursper week was left up tothe individual schoolboards. Most people havebeen sharply opposed tothe lengthened schoolday. Many feel that themotives wereappropriate, but thatthe means used werenot. For many reasons, most students areMedicine: AIDS, heartsFATHER TIMECastigates*t/~N-NMtf*\the e**tir<>S&*##to rx-c^^T1&*i//^/^•^w^YM**• J *1\ **^\ *fp^M ff*QJff)?xjLflcCVW <^\&/ r^1—^-^S^-^**opposed to the newrules. Senior RichardHollingsworth said,Teachers give workthat isnt necessarilybeneficial to thestudents, and the workis given because of therequirement to beworking all period.Others feel that thelonger hours cause inschool burnout to set inearlier in the schoolyear.Administrators havemixed feelings towardsthe new rules. Theconcept is good, but thehour-long classes arejust too long. Studentinterest for the subjectjust cant be kept up,and boredom sets in,said principal GaryDruckemiller. The lengthenedschool day has not beena successful solution fora difficult problem, said Englishdepartmentchairperson RuthGranich. If anything,it has exacerbated theproblem, she said.Local educators feelthat local solutions toproblems are muchmore workable.Hearts dominatedthe medical headlinesthis year, with twomore artificial heartsbeing implanted, and ababoon heart beingused to save the life of ababy. The other bigstory in medicine wasthe story of the fight tounderstand and defeatAcquired ImmuneDeficiency Syndrome(AIDS).After the death ofthe first artificial heartpatient, Barney Clark,March 14, 1984, thesearch for a secondrecipient began. Itended in Jasper,Indiana, the home ofWilliam Schroeder.Schroeder had beengiven approximately 10days to live prior toreceiving the Jarvik-7artificial heart in late1984. Schreoderrecovered quickly fromthe operation, until hesuffered a mild stroke. His recovery had beenslow but steady as ofpublication deadines.A third artificialheart was implanted inearly 1985, givingrenewed life to MurryHaydon. Haydonprogressed even betterthan Schroeder, andwas doing as well as, ifnot better than,Schroeder bypublication deadlines.Another type ofheart was transplantedinto an infant during1984. Baby Fae, as theinfant was referred to,received the heart of ababoon in place of herdefective one, in aneffort by doctors at theLoma Linda Hospitalin California topreserve her life. The doctors werewidely critized byanimal interest groups, who believed that thebaboon had as muchright to life as BabyFae. Others questionedthe morality of placingan animals organ intoa human body.In other medicalnews, the concern overAIDS increased as thenumber of cases beganto skyrocket.AIDS was first notedin 1979, in which therewere only 10 recordedcases, eight of whichresulted in deaths.Since then, the numberof cases skyrocketed to4320.The disease, whichaffects mostly malehomosexuals, causes abreakdown in theimmune system, allowing normallyharmless diseases tocripple and even kill itsvictims.Although numerouslabs have tried to find acure, scientists haveonly just begun tounderstand the disease, and the theories vary. Some believe thedisease is a virus, whileothers look formalfunctions in thebody. Whatever thecause, AIDS hasbecome a majorconcern in 1985. Thepresent key seems to bebasic research.20 Student Life |
