State qualifiers andfirst-place finishers for South includedfreshman Lynn Dunning in the 100- and200-yd. freestyles, junior Kristin Brownin an upset win in the 50-yd. freestyle,and Lana Elrod in the 500-yd. freestyle.The 400-yd. freestyle relay team —madeup of Brown, Dunning, Elrod, andfreshman Wendy Lowengrub —alsoqualified. South also sent twodivers — seniors Jill Ryser and SusieSchornhorst. However,some key swimmers were unable to compete because of sickness.South had a disappointing openingmeet, according to Talley, losing by sixpoints to Warren Central. Talley saidthere were two such meets which Southcould have won, possibly ending theseason 9-2.Describing the conference meet,Talley said that South swam as best aswe could, but sickness probably cost us aplace. Its like missing free throws at theend of a basketball game, commentedTalley. In sectional competition the Panthers finished fourth, sending one swimmer to state. Senior Steve Olshin wonthe sectional 100-yd. breaststroke in1:05.63, representing South well.90 Swimming
