Foreign language department very activeThe foreign language department wasinvolved in many special activities andprojects during the 1982-83 school year.In September, 16 exchange studentsarrived from Palencia, Spain. TheSpanish students stayed with Southstudents and attended BHS South during their three-week stay. Then 12 Southstudents traveled to Palencia in March tovisit Spain for three weeks.French students shared a similar experience in March and April. In March,10 South French students and Frenchteacher Linda Nowling boarded a planeheaded for France for a three-week exchange. The students and Nowling werein Paris for three days of their stay.Later in March the 16 students whohosted South students in France came tovisit Bloomington for three weeks and tostay with their exchange families.On one of the last weekends of theschool year, German students and instructor Dagnija Berzins took a trip toKings Island. The excursion was paidfor with money the students raised selling German candy.The entire department was involvedin only one fund raiser during the 1982-83 year. The department workedtowards buying a new projector by selling Christmas tree ornaments inNovember.In the 1982-83 national German competition, sponsored by the AmericanAssociation of Teachers of German,three high scorers from BHS South wereFred Busch, Janet Ebeling, and ZachonSmith. Lana Elrod was selected for thIndiana University Honors Program inForeign Languages.Judy Morrow, foreign languagedepartment chairperson, said she waspleased overall with the 1983 enrollment despite the budget cuts. Frenchand Spanish classes were offered in first-second-, third-, and fourth-year. Firstand second-year Latin was also taught in1982-83.
