If youdidnt, youre most unique. But the truthis that its a beginning.Sunday, May 22, 1983, BloomingtonSouth graduated 332 seniors. The Commencement ceremony was in the IndianaUniversity Auditorium.Class speaker for the class of 1983was Philip Ebeling, who opened hisspeech with an analogy about how theworld needs help and the world has ahelp-wanted ad out and we, the class of1983, should answer that ad by sayingwe do windows! Ebeling explained thatmany in the labor force clean (houses)but very few do windows, because thattakes a little extra. I like to think we havethat something extra.Ann Georg, who gave the invocation,reflected on the friendships thegraduates had made over the years. JillRyser, benediction speaker, gave specialthanks to retiring William Milne, assistant principal, from the graduating classof 1983.The Baccalaureate address waspresented by Michael Morgan, IUassociate professor of philosophy andJewish studies. Morgan started byquoting a Simon and Garfunkel song:When I think back to all the crap Ilearned in high school, its a wonder Ican think at all. Morgan said that thereason you cant think is youre tired,but not because your minds are overtaxed. Have you been pushed too far or notfar enough? You should be excitedrather than tired.Then Morgan left the present andwent to the future, adding, Now thatyou (the class of 83) have graduated,you have a whole lot of responsibility.You have to build your own life; youhave to live with success by yourself, andyou have to live with failure by yourself.Now your setting is yours to be chosen;before it wasnt. Your parents chosewhere you lived and whom with, butnow you have to choose.
