Description: New pool aidshealth classesThe major addition to Souths 1979-80physical education program was the building of the swimming and diving area.Physical education is a graduationrequirement. Students usually fulfill thisrequirement in the ninth grade. In the pastan inconvenience of the swimming programwas the time wasted traveling to Bryan Parkpool.Throughout the year each gym class participated in flag football, soccer, swimming,diving, bowling, ice skating, volleyball, basketball, badminton, conditioning, track andfield, softball, and relays. Bicycling wasadded to the advanced physical educationPE program;practice CPRprogram at South.A two-week cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) unit, sponsored by the RedCross, was the highlight of the healthclasses. At the end of the course, studentswere certified.Other subject matter included humanbehavior, anatomy, first aid, alcohol, narcotics, tobacco, and nervous and circulatorysystems of the human body.Driver education involved 30 hours ofclassroom work, six hours of driving time,and observation of other drivers.
