Behind the scenes... statistic ionsThe basketball statisticians most important job was to record all shots, free throws,rebounds, assists, and violations.Statisticians were senior managers; theyneeded a technical knowledge of the game.The stats collected were useful tocoaches in determining which areas neededimprovement.The football statisticians job was torecord charts—offensive charts, to see howwell players handled the ball; defensivecharts, how many tackles were made andwho made them; and quarter charts, howmany quarters each player played.The statisticians didnt need full technicalknowledge of the game but did need toknow who all the players were.The Tankerbelles, headed by captain JillDavis and co-captain Marcy McMurry,recorded the times of each swimmer.In addition to timing, Tankerbelles alsobaked cookies and acted as pep squads atthe swim meets.TOP LEFT: BASKETBALL STATISTICIANS.
