Description: A DAY ONStudents from the Interfaith Community ofEnvironmental Youth came together to celebrate andcontinue the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr.The Interfaith Community of Environmental Youth organizeda home weatherizing event on Martin Luther King Jr Day: Aday on, not a day off. Volunteers met at St. Pauls CatholicCenter in the afternoon to reflect on the work of Martin LutherKing, Jr. and environmental justice. Afterward, they broke upinto teams to become trained on how to properly weatherizehomes. Participants were able to apply their knowledge byvisiting homes in Bloomington to practice their energy savingtechniques. ICEY received a grant from the City ofBloomington MLK Commission to host the event and providefree weatherizing materials to homeowners.Senior Hannah Kasak-Gliboff feels the weatherizingproject was important to conduct on MLK Day becausepeople dont usually associate the environment with socialjustice, but a lot of environmental issues actually target certainsocioeconomic groups. For example, low income familieswho cannot keep up with house maintenance due to a lack ofmoney will end up receiving a higher energy bill. ICEY workstowards solving this issue by fixing cracks between doors andtheir frames to keep heat inside the house. Kasak-Gliboffbelieves many people are giving up on the environment, butMartin Luther King, Jr. preached for people to never give up oncauses important to them. She vows to continue helpingcommunity members become more eco-conscious and savemoney by weatherizing homes.Senior Emma DiLavore joined ICEY because of her passionto fight climate change. DiLavore believes climate change is oneof the biggest problems of [her] generation, and she is dedicatedto helping the cause. DiLavore enjoyed planning theweatherizing event because she believes initiatives such as thisone are incredibly beneficial to the community. DiLavore intendsto make great strides in socioeconomic equality, truly reflectingon what she believes Martin Luther King, Jr. stood for; in herwords, always being kind and helping everyone.Martin Luther King, Jr. was not specifically known for hispassion to achieve socioeconomic equality. However, TheInterfaith Community of Environmental Youth decided tocontinue his legacy by contributing service to the communitythrough this project. The effects of their volunteer work willshine in the coming months when clients see a large drop intheir electric bill.- SHAHZADI UPADHYAYQZ<<<LUCO LUco OCOLUCOo^° -> (J uoCNooZ<Being regarded to as one of the best films in 2016, LaLa Land, a musical starring Ryan Gosling and EmmaStone, has made over $136 million dollarsworldwide.
