Its fantastic to be a part of ateam which gets fourth in state and to know youvedone your very best.Sarah FeeSouths girls swim team surpassed all ofits previous records, with 9-1.The only defeat was against state champion Ben Davis.In the South Central Conference, the Panthers defeated defending champion Columbus North, 258-186. The Panthers won sectional with 322 points.For the first time the girls team achieveda third-place state ranking. The coachesassociation ranked them behind North Central and Ben Davis.In the state meet, junior Julie Boardbroke her own state ranking by two seconds(1:09.25) in the 100-yd. breast stroke. Shealso placed second in the 200-yd. freestyle.Jill Board swam fourth in the 500-yd. andtook fifth in the 100-yd. freestyle. FreshmanRene Koyanagi finished sixth in the 200-yd.individual medley. Souths 400-yd. relayteam (Jill and Julie Board, Koyanagi, andSarah Fee) swam to a third place (3:44.14).As a team the Bloomington South Panthers finished fourth with 93 points, behindBen Davis, North Central, and Munster. Aseason like 1978-79 gave Coach CarolineRichards reason to claim: This years girlsswim team was fantastic!Coach Ed Talley felt his teams 94-77 victory over Franklin was its best meet. Talleysaid, We knew we could beat them.David Edgeworth, Doug Koyanagi, andKevin Rillo set mid-season records: Edge-worth in the 100-yd. back stroke, Koyanagiin the 100-yd. individual medley, and Rilloin the 100-yd. butterfly. Edgeworth, ChrisHopson, Koyanagi, and Rillo formed the200-yd. medley relay.The Panthers took fifth place in the SCCmeet. Rillo won the 100-yd. butterfly with:56.1, a conference record.South did not win an event in the sectionals, finishing in sixth place. Edgeworth andRillo advanced to state competition, Edge-worth in the 100-yd. freestyle and Rillo inthe 100-yd. butterfly.The boys swim team ended the seasonwith a 2-7 record.TOP LEFT: GIRLS SWIM TEAM.
