TAflEnCBttlKSMHMBMfefl!Office clubs get down to businessFor students interested in pursuing business careers, five business clubs were opento them at South.Future Secretaries of America (FSA) wasan educational club organized to help students realize the problems of office work.The club was open to any sophomore, junior, or senior taking a business course. Theclub met once a month during the schoolyear. Ruth Schurtter and Mary Jane Trinkleserved as faculty advisers.Cooperative Office Education (COE) was aprogram in which local offices employedseniors, by application, for secretarial work.Members of the program attended school ahalf day and then worked part-time in theoffice. COE member Becky Plew said, Itsvery beneficial, especially for people wanting to be office workers. Its a very worthwhile class. Trinkle was the COE sponsor.Office Education Association (OEA) was aclub for junior and senior business students. Members of OEA attended a regionalconference, at which they competed inareas of office work. Members raisedmoney selling candy, jewelry, and Kit-n-Kaboodle. In November they held a rock-a-thon, with profits going to the Special Olympics for the Mentally Retarded. OEA member Leah Thompson commented, OEA isan active club that provides good experience for students interested in officecareers. Trinkle and Martha Street sponsored the club.DECA (Distributive Education Clubs ofAmerica) was open only to juniors and seniors. It involved students in business management, public speaking, merchandising,sales, job interviewing, and awards. DECAdirector was Jerry Denny.Distributive education (DE) studentsreceived two hours of on-the-job training.Classes were open only to seniors who hadcompleted salesmanship.TOP: COE.
