One volunteer Candy Striper explained that the responsibilitiesinvolved depend on the floor assigned tothe volunteer: I got pediatrics floor, whichis what I wanted. First I had to fill all thewater pitchers every morning, and then Ihelped serving the meals. I also got to playwith the little kids. Some of them loved company, but the nurses didnt have time tospend with them.Another volunteer community activityenjoyed by students at South is leading aBoy or Girl Scout troop. Sophomore MaryPardo led a troop of fourth- and fifth-gradeGirl Scouts at Childs Elementary School.Im kind of there as an extra adult. Themothers just dont have time to help,Pardo explained. Last year we went to Belmont, near Brown County, and camped outin teepees. It was really exciting, and I had alot of fun doing it. It takes up a lot of time.Youve got to plan all the activities if youregoing to do them right.Others involved in community projectsvisited nursing homes and hospitals andserved as volunteer policemen.134 Seniors/Community
