times upIn Jan. 2018, former Olympic gymnast doctor, Larry Nassar, pled guilty to seven counts of criminal sexual contact and wassentenced to 40 to 175 years in prison. In court, 150 of Nassarsvictims came forward and spoke about their experiences andthe need for heightened awareness and prevention of sexualassault in both gymnastics and the world overall. This comesduring the Times Up movement, which exposes and strives toend sexual harassment as well as the stigma that surrounds it.Even though the Larry Nassarscandal is a terrible thing, itspromoting women to speakout against sexual misconduct, and empowering (the)womens gymnastics communityas a whole, making usstronger.-freshman Carissa MooreI. Thisyear, the Bloomington SouthGymnastics Team had sevenmembers that are up for thechallenge; however, most ofthem are new to the Southteam. Six of the sevengymnasts are freshmen thatjust joined during 2018 season, leaving only oneupperclassman: junior EricaHuntington.Even though the team ismade up of mostly freshmen,Huntington believes that it is inno way a disadvantagebecause all the freshmenpossess so much talent. Mostof the girls have been doinggymnastics their whole lives, said Huntington, who hasplenty of confidence in herteam. They are allexperienced in their ownways, Huntington continued.Every athlete is dedicated togymnastics and worksstrenuous hours throughoutthe school year to prepare forthe teams competitions.Although Huntington isthe oldest member and theonly upperclassman on theteam, she does not feel anypressure from the coaches orthe other gymnasts tosucceed at a higher levelcompared to her teammates.Huntington is confident thatthe team will perform to thehighest standard possiblethroughout the season. (Thefreshman) are all supportiveand confident, Huntingtonsaid. Furthermore, Huntingtonacts as a leader to heryounger teammates andhelps lead the way as theycontinue their high schoolcareer; she is an example andencourages them tocompete extremely well.-Jenna Smith91Seth Thomasjunior |
