HOOSIERS OUTRUNCANCERfish out of waterstory by Hannah MayOn the sunny day ofSeptember 30th, 2017, Northstudents and Bloomingtoncitizens participated in theHoosiers Outrun Cancermarathon to raise money forcancer research. The eventraised about 3 million dollarsand team North was given abig shout out for having thelargest high school team formany years in a row! Thisyear, many of Norths athleticteams made their way out tothe event, which includedcheer, girls soccer, and boysand girls swimming anddiving teams. The swimmingand diving teams were therein support of their belovedCoach, David Tanner. CoachDave, as the swimmers anddivers call him, wasdiagnosed with Lymphoma.This dedicated coach of 20years is 72 years old and,despite his diagnosis, is stillcoaching the team. DavidTanner is such an importantman to many of theswimmers and divers.[Coach] Dave is someone I aspire to be, juniorAllison Flick said. He is very patient and sees the goodin everyone and every situation...he has impacted my lifeby being a second father figure and always being therefor me outside of swimming issues.Senior Ryan Paquette has also been positivelyimpacted by Coach Tanner.[His] impact on me, and all the otherswimmers, reaches far beyond the pool,said Paquette. Hes made swimming myfavorite high school experience.With the support of his team behindhim, Coach Dave continues his fightagainst cancer. We hope to see him formany more years running the 5k with hisbright red shirt on!BHSN Swimming and Diving teams pose for a group photo with Coach David Tanner at theannual Hoosiers Outrun Cancer event. Coach Dave ran the whole 5k run. The team ran withhim over the finish line, sporting their Courags, as Senior Caleb Poer calls the head wrapsthey wear. Theyre definitely a badge of honor to us, Poer siad.
