Description: Sideline SupportStory by Alyssa McMathThe North cheerleading squad left North onMarch 10th to travel to national competition forthe second year in a row.While the trip may have been memorable inmany ways, for some the most-interesting thingthat happened took place before the squad evengot to Florida to compete.Upon the early morning arrival to North for thedeparture to Nationals, the cheerleaders weresurprised to find that they were going to be ridingup to the airport in three stretch limos, seniorcheerleader Natalie Baye said.Many of the squads seniors described theNationals experience as the best thing that hadhappened to them during their cheerleadingcareers at North.Ill never forget the feeling I had in the pit ofmy stomach when the announcer named theschools that made it to finals, senior Alison Grubbsaid. Of course he saved the best for last, whichmade the suspense even more of a killer.Senior Krista Lepore said the competition was ahighlight of her Cougar career.(Its) by far the best accomplishment during highschool for me, Lepore said.The cheerleaders parents who held a candlelightvigil for the girls at Calvary Church the night beforetheir departure also surprised the girls.We had a lot of support from our parents,Lepore said.Grubb said its that kind of support that has allowedthe North cheer program to get where it is now.Throughout the three years Ive spent at Northour program has grown tremendously. The bestthing that has happened to me was our team andprogram growing stronger each year, she said.To me, all three years was the best thing thathappened to my career at North.I couldnt have asked for a better program.Grubb said.Cheerleading is harder than it looks.
