BUILDS HOPEby Jenna JerdenNorth students gave their hearts, handsand time to a great cause Septmeber 30 andNovember 11, helping to build the first Habitat for Humanity house of the year.The new Cougar chapter had a vital rolein the house, providing the shingles througha grant from the Bloomington Teen Council.North also provided energetic workers tohelp with all the building processes.Workers arrived early Saturday morning at 8:00 a.m. to begin work on the house.McDonalds provided a generous breakfastfor all the North volunteers, and the mealgave everyone the boost that was needed aswork began. Students were involved inputting up supports, shingles and rain guards,and installing vinyl siding. By the November work date, students were painting interior rooms and landscaping. A home cookedmeal was provided for lunch, a welcomebreak from the work.Throughout the day, students came andwent according to shifts and the overallturnout was high. Many students took timeout of their busy Saturday schedules to tostop by and help with the house for a fewhours. Around 30 student volunteers helpedat the house each Saturday, a great turnoutfor the group. I was very impressed with allthe people who came out, they really exceeded expectations, said co-presidentKasey Bullerdick. The progress made wasamazing, and by the second build, the housewas on its way to becoming a home.The house will be occupied by JenniferTitus, a woman confined to a wheelchair. Sheapplied for a Habitat house last year and itwill be the first handicapped-accesible homebuilt by Habitat for Humanity in this area.The house includes a ramp up to the frontporch, extra wide doors, wheelchair-levelkitchen counters and accessible appliances. It was a great experience, we had a lot offun while helping change someones life. Iwas proud of our chapter and the way weworked, said treasurer Lauren Kaminski.The Bloomington North chapter is oneof only two high school chapters in the stateof Indiana, and they are looking to mergewith Bloomington South and Edgewood toform a Monroe County high school chapter.The chapter continued to raise funds by promoting many school events.
