Description: |
Fifty-one years after the completion of the schoolbuilding located at the south end of College Avenue, then the southern edge of Bloomington; and150 years after Indiana was granted statehood, thecity of Bloomington once more built a new highschool. With floors sagging in the old red building, rooms choked with too many students, and facilities inadequate or outdated, plans for the newschool were born. On January 26, 1961, Mr. William Hutchison, then principal of Bloomington HighSchool was appointed chairman of the buildingprogram for the new school. Department heads consulted teachers in each department to determinewhat would be needed in the new structures. Theschool board searched for a suitable tract of land, selecting a site south of the city limits, the Wylieestate, and purchased the 70 acres for $263,500,in December of 1962. Final plans were approvedin October of 1963, and silver shovels broke groundin March of 1964.Last fall, students looked for the first time intothe rooms—four and a half years and five milliondollars later. The change in location brought changes in thestudent body itself. To some, the new buildingstrange and large, felt slightly colder, more impersonal than the familiar old buildings appearedto be. The atmosphere was more business-like, theclasses seemed better disciplined. The front steps, gathering place for goofing off and old friends, were not to be found at the new school—anotherplace had to be found. Some of the feelings andtraditions were left behind. In time the new schoolwill show its own character. Different? Yes, thekids are different here. How? This is the firstyear-time will tell. The first year has passed. In words and pictures, it went like this.LIMESTONE is symbol of strength.<&- Mii |
